ESD4 - Energy, the Environment, and Society

Course Description

Advisory: ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000H or ESL D005.; *** COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines the role energy plays in our modern global industrialized society. The rapid growth of human populations worldwide combined with increases in fossil fuel-related energy to support human activities have caused social, environmental, health and safety, geopolitical, and economic ramifications. Damage from nuclear accidents and oil spill disasters negatively impacts the planet in the form of air, water, and soil pollution. Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are causing global warming, more intense and destructive weather patterns, and rising sea levels, resulting in the relocation of humans to coastal areas, species extinction, and wildlife habitat destruction. Our continued dependence on fossil fuels as a primary source of energy results in economic inflation, loss of discretionary income, and geopolitical strife. This course analyzes the impact our energy choices have on the sustainability triangle-the environment, the economy, and social equity. (Field trip outside of scheduled class time may be required for this course.)
